…a place that may just have teething problems or possible more than meets the eyes
With high hopes we arranged a visit to our new local meat fix. The weeks leading up to their opening we eagerly watched as the signs and decor was completed. This could be it! the new hot spot!
I managed to double book with the family and the long awaited school reunion, I decided to sit in with them till the class of 97 arrived. As you enter you will notice there was no expense spared to make Efes look like the best kebab house in town. The were a few teething problems with the menus, seating arrangements and starter which I was willing to let pass.
I joined my class reunion when they arrived, we ordered lahmachun for starters to go with our fresh bread, humus and salad. For mains we decided to go for 3 mains rather than a mix grill, we ordered a chicken shish, lamb shish and a ribs, all which came accompanying with rice and a side of salad. The lahmachun came promptly, looking pale and under cooked, it was cold to the touch. Bringing to the attention to the waiter, our starter was reheated while we waited to be promptly served again. The lahmachun was okay, the meat tasted a little to fatty in my opinion.
The mains arrived almost too soon, the rice was far too oily, my class mates decided to give most of it a miss. We made an attempt on the lamb shish which was over cooked and lacking flavour. The chicken was dry and hard to swallow, the ribs fatty and not what I was hoping for. While we caught up on the years gone, by I felt disappointed by Efes, a place that may just have teething problems or possible more than meets the eyes.
My friend at the table recognised the manager, Efes had the same owner as the kebab joint under cineworld in Ilford. Now I knew where I recognised the food quality.
Efes is in a nice location, nice decor, mediocre food with an over priced menu. For ribs check the legendary Tas Firin, for quality mixed grills try Haz or Hazeve, for kebab shop quality kebabs your better off going to City Kebab in Mile End.
Sorry Efes, don’t think I will be coming back, nice venue I must say for Commercial Road.
